Ever since the reveal, release, and success of Xbox Game Pass, many within the gaming community have been wondering if PlayStation will be offering something similar. Today, Bloomberg reports that PlayStation is planning something similar and it is targeted to be released next Spring. According to the report, this new subscription offering blends PlayStation Now and PS Plus.
Code-named Spartacus, the subscription will allow PlayStation owners access to a catalog of modern and classic games for a monthly fee. According to sources, it will be available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. When it launches, Spartacus will merge PS Plus and PlayStation Now. PlayStation Plus is Sony’s equivalent to Xbox Live. It provides access and is required for most online multiplayer games and offers free monthly titles. PlayStation Now is Sony’s streaming service and allows players to stream or download older games. Right now, it’s Sony’s closest thing to Xbox Game Pass, offering a selection of games to stream or download for a monthly fee. Bloomberg believes that Sony will retain the PlayStation Plus branding but phase out PlayStation Now.
Documentation reveals that the service will have three tiers. The first tier includes existing PlayStation Plus benefits. The second tier offers a large catalog of PlayStation 4 and, in the future, PlayStation 5 games. The third tier would add extended demos, game streaming, and a library of classic PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PSP games.
