New Overwatch Short Story Focuses on Mercy, Teases New Skin

Blizzard has released a brand new story-related feature for one of the heroes in Overwatch. This time it’s all about everyone’s favorite medic Dr. Angela Zeigler, better known as Mercy. Normally the company would create special animated shorts to further the lore of the game, but this time we got an actual 24-page long story with some images, making this rather unique. Even more intriguing is the final shot which looks like Mercy’s in game model with a brand new skin from the story itself.

The story takes place in Egypt, where Mercy is working in a camp assisting others with medical related issues. During this time Mercy looks back on her time in Overwatch with all of the highs and lows that entailed her experience. From swooping in and saving people from the Omnics, to reflecting back on Reyes and his transformation to Reaper after his battle with Jack Morrison, also known as Soldier 76.

At some point, 76 and Ana come looking for her, which only depressed Mercy to an extent as she states that she never wanted to become a battle medic. Eventually, she does decide to don the Valkyrie suit again to protect the camp, and in the process remembers why she started all of this in the first place. Knowing that the group is getting back together, Mercy declares that her battle is not over before quoting her famous line “Heroes never die.”

While the story itself is inspirational in its own right, the most surprising part came at the very end where a shot of Mercy is shown with what looks like a brand new skin for the actual Overwatch game. The skin is Mercy with white standard doctor jacket and a black shirt underneath. She also happens to be wearing her Valkyrie boots as well as the suits wings on her back. It’s important to note that Blizzard has not officially confirmed this as a brand new skin, only placing it at the end of the story for us to find and ogle at.

It’s more than likely that the developer will add this skin during the next event, which could come as soon as December. Still, it’s great to see more heroes get the story driven treatment, as it gives us a lot of different perspectives during this conflict. We may be seeing more of these as the company will probably be shifting more of its focus on the upcoming Overwatch 2 which was announced at BlizzCon 2019. We were able to play the demo at the convention and came away fairly impressed.  We also got to talk to the Game’s Director, Jeff Kaplan, who explained why they went with the progression system for the game.

Alex Levine: I like to write about video games, movies, tv shows, and other types of creatively imaginative alleyways and avenues. Currently assessing how long it will take to complete a new book.
