The lonely, deep sea survival game Subnautica can now be experienced with other players. A new mod named Nitrox, developed by the Subnautica community member Sunrunner, now allows for cooperative multiplayer play in the PC version of the game. The mod itself is still in the early alpha stages of development.
However, the Nitrox mod has numerous features like synced character movement, item gathering, base building, a chat feature, and a host of other features. However, due to the instability of still being in early development, Sunrunner does not recommend players use the Nitrox mod for casual play until a more stable version of the mod releases in the future. The Nitrox mod is also open source which will allow other fans of the game to help develop and iterate on the mod itself.
Even with known instability, the Nitrox multiplayer mod has been downloaded over one hundred thousand times since its initial release a week ago. For players interested in trying out the Nitrox mod, they can download the mod via its page on Nexus Mods after logging in to or creating an account on the site.
Subnautica fans are also accustomed to experiencing the game in an early state. Subnautica itself spent a little over three years in early access on Steam before leaving early access and getting a full PC release at the beginning of this year. Subnautica also received a full official release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One earlier this month. The game’s developers Unknown Worlds Entertainment are also working on a standalone icy themed expansion titled Subnautica: Below Zero which will have an early access release at some point in 2019.
You can currently get Subnautica for free via the Epic Games Store. You can also check out a teaser trailer for the Nitrox multiplayer mod for the game below:
