You may remember hearing about a Pokémon game in the works a few months ago starring Magikarp. At the time, it looked like it was going to at least start off as a Japan-only release, but as of a couple of days ago, Pokémon: Magikarp Jump is available on iOS and Android devices all over the world and is available in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese.
The game was announced on the official Pokémon website and the announcement explains some of the mechanics of the game. Basically, the goal of the game is to train a Magikarp to jump higher than your opponents’ Magikarps. Eventually, you want your Magikarp to become the League Champion of jumping. The announcement states that you can no longer use a specific Magikarp once it either gets knocked out or reaches Level 20, at which point it evolves into Gyarados and is therefore ineligible to partake in Magikarp-jumping competitions. However, once you are unable to use your Magikarp, you will be given a new one that starts off a little stronger than your previous one.
Other Pokémon will also make appearances in the game. The announcement states that some of these Pokémon will help you in various ways, such as giving your Magikarp food that will make it stronger and jump higher. However, Kotaku reports that other Pokémon, such as Pidgeotto and Voltorb, exist in the game purely to ruin everything by straight-up killing your Magikarp, so watch out.
Pokémon: Magikarp Jump is currently available for free for iOS and Android devices.
