During DC Fandome 2021, there were new looks for two upcoming DC video games, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Gotham Knights. Both games originally debuted during last year’s DC Fandome event. The DC Fandome event is a virtual event platform created by DC Comics. The event was created due to the cancelation of San Diego Comic-Con which was canceled last year like so many events because of COVID-19. The event showcased everything new coming in the next few years that pertains to DC Comics including television, movies, comics, and video games. The new Gotham Knights trailer showcased a new look at the Court of Owls, a secret society that seems that have been ruling Gotham for many years.
Gotham Knights is an open-world RPG that puts players in the role as one of the members of the Bat-Family: Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin. After the death of Batman, it’s up to these four to take up the mantle and defend Gotham. The game is set in the most dynamic and interactive Gotham City yet and can be played solo or with one other hero.
In a behind-the-scenes video also released during DC Fandome, Co-Creator of the Court Of Owls Scott Synder talked about developer WB Montreal’s take on the material. “One of the joys of writing comics is the hope that someone would take that story and make it their own and I think the folks over at Warner Bros. have done a tremendous job translating and evolving the Court of Owls into the game,” Synder said. “When I went out there to see what they were doing with the game, I was blown away. I mean, it took what we’d done with Court of Owls but it just elevated it beyond a lot of the borders we had.” “One of the biggest challenges with bringing the Court of Owls from comic books to video games is really the interactive nature of what video games are,” Ann Lemay, Narrative Director, WB Montreal said. “You can’t really relay on what you think you know about the Court. We have expanded, we have added to it.”
There wasn’t a lot of new gameplay revealed unlike the official reveal but we did learn some things about the Talons, which are soldiers that the Court of Owls utilizes. WB Montreal is creating different varieties of Talons that players will have to face. As players learn the different strengths and weaknesses that each variety of Talon has, they will have to opportunity to use that information to select the best equipment and which abilities can work best against them.
Gotham Knights was delayed to 2022 earlier this year. No new release date has been announced yet.
