New Descent Game Successfully Kickstarted

Yet another PC classic is being raised from the dead thanks to KickstarterDescent Underground, a prequel to the popular Descent games from the 1990s, has been successfully Kickstarted and is now in production.

Barely scraping past their base $600,000 goal, developer Descendent Studios amassed $601,773 to fund their modern-day update of the space combat actioner.  “We want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to each and every one of our community members who backed, helped spread the word, offered ideas and feedback, and just MADE THIS HAPPEN!” reads a statement on the official site.

Descent Underground, as explained on its Kickstarter page, will bring back a forgotten genre of space combat game for both fans of the original games and a new generation of gamers who weren’t even born when the series was in its heyday. “As consoles took over the game market, an entire generation grew up without Descent’s heart-pounding, non-stop action” reads the page’s description, “We’re staying true to the original flight mechanics, arcade style combat, and tightly twisting map design while taking it to the next level!”

As such, the game will have the original games’ signature six degrees of freedom, which allows players to maneuver their ships up-down, left-right, forward-backward, and yaw and roll. It will also have a dedicated single player campaign, multiplayer combat, ship customization, destructible terrain, Unreal Engine 4 graphics, and support for the Oculus Rift.

If the above trailer isn’t enough to win you over, Descendent Studios are headed by gaming veterans whose credits include Wing Commander, Star Citizen, Star Wars Galaxies, Thief: Deadly Shadows, and Crusader: No Remorse.

With their Kickstarter drive now over, the studio is now seeking additional funding through their official website, with an initial goal of $25,000. This funding will be used to add new varieties of ships to the game.

Descent Underground will be flying to the PC sometime in March 2016.
