Over the weekend, Wizards of the Coast held a panel at PAX East for one of its biggest releases of the year, with Magic: The Gathering – FINAL FANTASY. The set, which releases next month on June 13 will see characters from every mainline game, depicted through the lens of MTG. This will feature the largest collection of FINAL FANTASY artwork ever in a single game, drawing from across the franchise. Fans will see their favorite stories, characters and moments from FINAL FANTASY depicted across Magic cards, with these icons of the series captured on over 100 legendary creature cards across the entire release. During the panel, Wizards of the Coast showcased some new cards and has shared a breakdown of the game mechanics coming with this set.
The special mechanics and content coming with Magic: The Gathering – FINAL FANTASY were inspired by the series’ rich world and incredible creatures that are beloved by fans worldwide.

Job Select is a new triggered ability found on some equipment in this set that will create a 1/1 Hero creature token, and are immediately equipped with the equipment card that was cast. Each equipment card with Job Select adds a creature type to the equipped creature, like Cleric for White Mage’s Staff, or Wizard for Black Mage’s Rod, etc. There is also an extra buff.

Summons will make its mark with the set in the form of the game’s first-ever Saga Creatures, combining the storytelling of Sagas, which activate a trigger for each turn before going away, and the combat readiness of creatures.

Double-faced cards make their return with Magic: The Gathering – FINAL FANTASY. Players can transform the front side of a card for its mana cost and full its required conditions to transform it to its alternate form. Iconic FINAL FANTASY characters, minigames, story moments, and more are represented on double-faced cards throughout the set.
Tiered cards will offer three different effects, increasing in effectiveness with how much mana is paid.

Adventures also make their return to MTG. This time, they can be found on a cycle of Towns. These cards will have two parts. The Advetnure is an instant or sorcery that players can see of the lower-left quadrant of the card. Adventures have their own name, mana cost, type line (including the Adventure subtype), and rules text. The other part is a permanent—a land, in this case. The land’s name, type line are where you would normally find them, while the rules text can be found on the right side.

Landcycling abilities, seen on cards with a basic land type such as plainscycling, islandcycling, swampcycling, and so on, allow you to discard a card to search your library for a card with the specified land type.
