Say what you will about SNK’s Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, and I know a lot of Mr. Karate haters will, but you’ve got to respect just how consistent the game is with updates and new characters, especially in comparison to other contemporary fighting games on the market, and they’re not slowing down now that we’re given the trailer for the next lineup of DLC characters coming to the game.
Of course it opens with our previous cast of DLC: Mr. Karate (soon to be nerfed), Kim Jae Hoon, Krauser, Geese Howard, Blue Mary, and Kenshiro. But enough about the old timers we’ve got shiny new toys to look at!
First is Rick Strowd, a Fatal Fury original and a character that hasn’t been seen in quite a while. Rick was never at the top of anyone’s favorite SNK characters list but he does have some fans, probably owing to his cool design, Native American heritage, and boxing moveset which is always a crowd pleaser.
Then there’s Duck King, a character on the goofier side and one that most Fatal Fury players adore. He’s a DJ that uses his love of music to influence his breakdancing style. Duck King is definitely a character people tend to like but always seems to just miss out on making the roster, so we’re lucky to have him here.
We then have Kim Kaphwan, SNK regular and father of fellow City of the Wolves roster members Kim Jae Hoon and Kim Dong Hwan. Maybe it was kind of guaranteed that a massive fan favorite like Kim wouldn’t miss this game after missing the original Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves, though it’ll be interesting to see how his taekwondo clashes with that of his sons’.
And of course, the talk of the town, the final DLC character for this upcoming season: Laocorn Gaudeamus. If you just play SNK games your reaction might be, “who is that?” Which is a fair reaction as Laocorn is not an SNK game character, but rather an OVA original from the 1994 Fatal Fury animated movie, Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture, so I guess this was a long time coming. He’s a cool design, and a pretty worthy addition to the SNK God complex lineup of villains. Rather than using a mastery of martial arts like fellow Fatal Fury villains Geese and Krauser, Laocorn instead relies on magic armor to power his attacks which is more in line with what you’d see from something like King of Fighters. It’ll be interesting to see how he translates into the game, as in the movie a lot of his moveset was inspired by Krauser and, well, Krauser is already in City of the Wolves.
But that’s your lineup for the next season, a good mix of fan favorites and left-field picks! Other games could learn from this roster lineup, and if this trend continues we’ll be seeing plenty more memorable characters for City of the Wolves.
