Netflix is already making strides in its goal to become big in the video game industry. According to mobilegamer.biz, the tech company is looking to hire a game developer “…to work on a brand-new AAA PC game” at its newly acquired Los Angeles game studio. Netflix has been explicit in dipping its toes into the mobile and cloud gaming sphere, but for them to delve into a title as big as a AAA game, cements the fact that they are in for the long haul.
While the specifics of the game are currently unknown, what we can gather from the job listing is that it most likely will be either an FPS or Third-Person Shooter, considering Netflix is looking for a game developer with a deep experience in either. The listing also states that the ideal candidate for the job should have “…extensive experience working on live service games…”, but whether or not the unknown game will be live service remains to be seen.
However, the most interesting information pertaining to the role goes beyond the responsibilities for developing a game. The job listing states that the game developer must “…develop the world/characters/narrative that are worthy of a Netflix film/TV series” and “…develop and maintain a single source of truth about the game world, characters, universe, and narrative to assist with onboarding new team members, and help with expansion of the IP into other media.”
Considering that the Los Angeles studio is led by the former executive producer of Overwatch Chacko Sonny, a game that is notable for its focus on its narrative and characters, its unsurprising that Netflix would go this route for its games. One simply has to point to the success of series like Riot Games’ Arcane series and Castlevania to know that the market is there and that it wouldn’t be impossible to pull off.
Mobilegamer.biz also noted other job listings at Netflix’s Los Angeles gaming studio including a technical director, art director, live service analyst, and lead engineer, all with content alluding to this unannounced game.
