One of the biggest questions that always comes up in the video game industry is when will a popular or fan-favorite dormant game make its return, if ever. At this time, one of those franchises is The Last of Us. Following the release of The Last of Us Part II, the ending was left open leaving many to speculate whether or not another game will be made. Over the past few years, Naughty Dog President Neil Druckmann has provided small updates regarding another title in the franchise saying that there is a general outline and idea of a story for a new game but they are currently hard at work on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Now, Druckmann has provided new update on where things stand, saying for those waiting to see another chapter to not hold their breath.
Back in 2021, Druckmann said that a story outline for a potential third game was written but was not in active development. In January 2023, when asked about a third game at that time, Druckmann told The Hollywood Reporter: “I think there’s more story to tell.” Last February, he confirmed that a concept for a third game was in his mind and he thought there would be one more chapter to the story.
In Grounded II, the making of The Last of Us Part II documentary, Druckmann talked about what’s next for the franchise. “I don’t have a story, but I do have that concept that, to me, is as exciting as 1, as exciting as 2, is its own thing, yet has this through line for all three,” he said. “So it does feel like there’s probably one more chapter to this story.”
When asked about The Last of Us Part III in a new interview with Variety, Druckmann said: “I was waiting for this question. I guess the only thing I would say is don’t bet on there being more ‘Last of Us.’ This could be it.”
While we’ll have to wait and see whether or not another Last of Us game, Season 2 of The Last of Us is set to premiere next month starting on April 13.
