The future of the NBA 2k League is unclear thanks to recent decisions from the league’s staff. According to Dexerto, the league’s poor viewership has caused its staff to completely rethink how the team should be run.
This came to a head on July 2nd, where the league’s CEO Andrew Perlmutter held a brief town hall and allegedly announced major layoffs alongside the plans to revitalize the league. According to some players who witnessed the town hall, the entire league was fired.
Following the town hall NBA and Take-Two Interactive released a joint statement detailing all the new changes coming to the league. According to the statement, the NBA 2K League will be reimagined into a “global digital entertainment business,” combining the league with a “new digital media brand” and “immersive live events.”
The fan response towards the news was mixed. Some saw the revamp as only a matter of time while others sympathized for the employees affected, and with how little warning they were given.
However, while both organizations are eagerly jumping into implementing all of these changes, a significant portion of eSports players and other employees are now out of work.
Esports casters Harris Rubenstein and Jamie Diaz Ruiz noted on a Twitch Livestream after the town hall, that these layoffs would leave the league in a hiatus, causing many of these players to be out of work for at least 18 months until it reopens.
More information on the changes within the NBA 2K League will be given out in the coming months. Fans interested in learning more should head over to the official NBA 2k League website and social media.
