Magic: The Gathering has been one of the most popular games since it first released over 30 years ago. This year has already been a pretty big year for the game as Wizards of the Coast have already announced two big collaborations with the acclaimed cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender as well as with the iconic game Final Fantasy VII. The release of their next major set Tarkir: Dragonstorm is set to release in a few short weeks on April 11, 2025. Today, we here at mxdwn are lucky to exclusively unveil two cards from the game’s return to Tarkir.
The first is the Blue Creature Dragonstorm Forecaster. This Creature allows you to search your library for a card named Dragonstorm Globe or Boulderborn Dragon, reveal it, and then put it into your hand.. The second card is the aforementioned Dragonstorm Globe. This is an Artifact that allows each Dragon you control to enter play with an additional +1/+1 counter on it. It also lets you add one mana of any color.
Along with exclusively showcasing these two cards we were able to ask Athena Froehlich, Product Architect for Tarkir: Dragonstorm, a few questions and got some answers that are sure to excite fans.
Q: How many different dragon creatures will Tarkir: Dragonstorm have?
A: We wanted to go bigger than we ever have before with dragons in this set! There are 27 new dragon creatures in the Tarkir: Dragonstorm main set (one more than there were in Dragons of Tarkir). The Commander decks include 19 new dragon designs spread across the five decks.
Q: How many different printings will there be? How many different printings / variants will there be for Mox Jasper?
A: Mox Jasper will be available in three versions – the main set version, in a draconic frame, and as a serialized headliner. The main set version, with art by Steven Belledin, will be available in non-foil and traditional foil in Play and Collector Boosters. Draconic frame cards are available in non-foil and traditional foil in Play Boosters and Collector Boosters. The serialized retro frame headliner version of Mox Jasper is available in Serialized Double Rainbow Foil and appears only in Tarkir: Dragonstorm Collector Boosters. Serialized versions of Mox Jasper can appear in Collector Boosters of any language, but the card will always be in English.
Q: Will there only be 1 serialized card in this set?
A: Yes, the headliner Mox Jasper is the only serialized card in the set. Available only in Tarkir: Dragonstorm Collector Boosters, the serialized retro frame copy of Mox Jasper card sports artwork by the one and only Dan Frazier.
Q: Will any mechanics from recent sets such as Exhaust, Max, Start Your Engines, Freerunning, Disguise or Investigate return in this set?
A: You will see returning mechanics from years past return in small quantities in Tarkir: Dragonstorm. The primary set mechanics fans can expect to see are the new mechanics Endure, Flurry, Renew, Mobilize, Harmonize, Omens, and Behold. Surveil and hybrid mana will also be making a prominent return.
Q: How many cards is the set going to be in total?
A: There are 271 cards in Tarkir: Dragonstorm’s Main Set.
Q: Any special secrets you care to reveal for fans to watch out for?
A: The flavor text throughout the set includes many gems. Eagle eye fans may notice references to the original Tarkir block.
