First announced back in February, Magic: The Gathering will crossover with the beloved RPG series Final Fantasy with a new set featuring characters and items from across the series. With the set releasing in just a few short weeks on June 13, we’ve seen plenty of cards and heard the new mechanics the set is bringing with it to the game. Now, we here at mxdwn get the honor to unveil one of the cards that have yet to be seen! Thus, let get to the reveal and introduce the iconic Diamond Weapon from Final Fantasy VII as it appears in the set.

Diamond Weapon is a Green Legendary Artifact Creature with an ability of “This spell costs 1 less to cast for each permanent card in your graveyard.”  It also has the abilities Reach as well as Immune. The latter allowing to “prevent all combat damage the would be dealt to Diamond Weapon.”

The card’s flavor text “A tutelary creature said only to appear when the planet is in grave danger” is a call out to the pivotal role the creature plays during the climax of Final Fantasy VII. Players of the remake trilogy of Final Fantasy VII also get their first look at this dangerous foe in the final chapter of the trilogy if they’ve never played the original game.

The Diamond Weapon card looks to be a powerful addition coming as part of the Final Fantasy set. Eager fans ready to get their hands on the card won’t have to wait much longer. The Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy set releases in a little over two weeks from now on June 13, 2025.
