Mr. Friendly is a recently released Doom mod that repurposes all Doom levels into Animal Crossing-esque social spaces. This nonviolent take on the series has you playing as Mr. Friendly, a guardian demon who is tasked with helping improve the lives he encounters in Hell.
The structured levels in this Doom mod exist as they would normally, except now their usual ambiance is juxtaposed. The objective of Mr. Friendly is to relax, take in the scenery, and explore at leisure. Players may still partake in quests, but harbor none of the usual stress attached to each task. This mod currently only supports Doom running on GZVoom 3.3 or later, and can be easily paired with any Doom IWAD or user-created vanilla Doom level. The developer, JP LeBreton, has noted that this mod is still in development, but can be downloaded at no cost. There is some placeholder art scattered throughout, but interested players can still marvel at a genuinely saccharine revisit to the Doom franchise. Players are encouraged to reach out to the developer if they wish to propose prospective pixel art for the final product.
The once rampaging monsters scattered throughout now have names, and want to know how your day is going. Special new items are scattered around the levels (with a copy of Ride the Lightning by Metallica being one of them), and quests that usually consist of errands are granted to the player. You’ll know if one of the monsters needs a favor as they will begin to project heart animations. Your gun can now be utilized to paint vibrant pictures on the walls, and the mayhem of the outside world can be enjoyed as a breath of fresh air.
The Mr. Friendly mod can be downloaded on itch.io now. Be sure to check out the trailer below for a gameplay showcase.
