Mortal Kombat X PC Patch is a Komplete Disaster

In a stunning display of incompetence, a newly released patch for the PC version of Mortal Kombat X has managed to wipe out user data of anyone unfortunate enough to download it.

The patch was developed by the studio behind the porting of the game to the PC, High Voltage Software, with the intention of improving the netcode to allow for smoother online play. Prior to its release, developer NetherRealm had said that the patch would “literally bring the PC version to parity with the console versions and there’s huge improvements coming to that version,” and that “We’re really excited to get them the version they deserve.”

Instead, the patch has successfully erased all progress PC users have made in Mortal Kombat X. This means all unlocked characters, fatalities, costumes, records, and just about anything unlocked in the Krypt have been reset. Others have reported that the patch also locked them out of certain screen resolutions.

Users took to the Steam forums to express their outrage, with a few of them admitting that they were using cheat engines to give themselves millions of Koins, the in-game currency, to compensate for the lost data.

High Voltage has since then responded to the furor with a statement that read:

We are temporarily removing the patch until we can pinpoint the cause of save data loss. We are actively working on this and will keep everyone posted as we work towards a fix. We sincerely apologize for this disruption.

As PC Gamer points out, undoing a 15 GB patch entailed afflicted users having to download another 15 GB patch to revert to the previous version of Mortal Kombat X; 30 Gigabytes of bandwidth for absolutely nothing, essentially.

It will be interesting to see what Warner Bros. and NetherRealm will offer PC users to compensate for this fracas. When Mortal Kombat X launched on the PC to disaster, users were compensated with 10,000 Koins. They’re going to need to comp way more Koins for this new incident.

In the meantime, frustrated users waiting for Warner Bros., NetherRealm and High Voltage to get their act together can watch this shocking tell-all from the men behind the curtain.
