NetherRealm Studios might have moved on from bringing new content to Mortal Kombat, that hasn’t stopped the title from bringing in some strong numbers. According to publisher Warner Bros. Interactive, and reported by Xbox Achievements, Mortal Kombat 11 has now sold more than 12 million units worldwide. In addition, the entire franchise itself has now surpassed more than 73 million units sold world wide. To put this milestone in perspective, video game statistician Daniel Ahmad tweeted out some other sales numbers for reference, and the difference is pretty staggering.
As you can see in the above tweet, Mortal Kombat now stands above some of the most revered and respected fighting game franchises in the video game industry. Super Smash Bros. which has arguably one of the most active communities in the industry, is second to Mortal Kombat in overall lifetime sales. Below that is Tekken and Street Fighter, two outstanding fighting series that continue to be very active in the gaming community today. Without a doubt, Mortal Kombat 11 was a major factor in this equation, as it has also gone onto be the best-selling entry in the franchise.
The first Mortal Kombat originally launched in 1992 and was created by just four people. It quickly caught fire in the video game arcade scene, which then translated to the home console market. The franchise went onto dominate the 1990’s as one of the most popular fighting game franchises, usually competing with the aforementioned Street Fighter and Tekken. At the turn of the millennium, the series took a different direction and went full 3D, with some mixed results along the way. Eventually they rebounded in 2011, or in this case a soft reboot. Since then, NetherRealm has made the series one of their major priorities, and even though they’re done with Mortal Kombat 11, we can’t wait to see what they’re working on next.
