In the same same earnings call where they revealed their future plans on going forward with more live service titles, Warner Bros. also shared some amazing sales statistics with one of their most recent releases, Mortal Kombat 1. The company revealed that the game has sold nearly three million copies since it launched this past September, an impressive achievement for NetherRealm Studios and company. This is especially noteworthy since the title is not available for either the Xbox One or the PlayStation 4, as it was released only for the current hardware generation.
To put this in perspective, Capcom’s Street Fighter 6 sold approximately 2.5 million copies in the first few months of being available. In just over two months, Mortal Kombat 1 has managed to reach and surpass those statistics, and with new content on the way, those numbers will more than likely go up exponentially. As we already mentioned in our previous report, Warner Bros. plans on increasing the live service aspect for all of their IPs, and future ones. This includes Mortal Kombat 1, where they plan on extending support for the title with a duration of three to four years.
This is a major departure for the series, as content, expansions, and other in-game items generally all come within a one to two-year time span. However, with the new plan being implemented by Warner Bros. it now appears that Ed Boon and his studio will be making even more content than ever before for their series. This more than likely means we’ll see more fighters added to the title than the already announced six who will be making their appearances soon. This includes Omni-Man who will become available this week.
