When a game can’t secure an audience, the game’s studio will pull various tactics from the playbook: free weekends, sales, updates, and content. Anything to try to capture an audience, and a lot of the time it unfortunately doesn’t work out, as many gamers will either have been scorned by the game, or people don’t find any interest. In that case, the game walks the line of EOS, and the studio may suffer major layoffs due to a game’s failure. Unfortunately, now, 1 year after its launch, Moonshot Games is officially stopping development on Wildgate and will release one last update to the game. They also stated that the studio will not be facing layoffs, which is good. They just couldn’t capture an audience to fund the game and have decided to stop all future development.
Wildgate is a PvPvE Sci-Fi multiplayer shooter that was released in July 2025, and its reception was positive at first, with 7,799 concurrent players on Steam at launch. With many praising the game’s gameplay loop and art. Unfortunately, the player base started to dwindle as many stopped playing, stating that it had a sky-high skill floor and was punishing for new players and uncoordinated players. It essentially wasn’t casual-friendly. They unfortunately couldn’t capture back its audience and now can’t sustain itself. However, the game isn’t going anywhere, stated by the devs, “Wildgate is not going away. We’re proud of the game and the community that has grown around it. Wildgate will continue to receive occasional updates like bug fixes, balance updates, and small events, activations, or rewards that generally repurpose existing content.”
The game will still be playable and purchasable, as they plan to assign a small team to monitor and fix minor issues. They also have one major update for July: “Getting straight to the point: Patch 1.5.4 is going to be Wildgate’s last big patch for a while.” With this comment, it looks like they could visit the game later down the line, but nothing is guaranteed. “After Patch 1.5.4, a small core team will keep an eye on servers.
It sucks to see that this is the outcome for Wildgate, as the game has promise, just had a rough start, but it goes to show how important the early stage of the game is now in the current climate. Best of luck to the team and studio, and hopefully, they will learn from this and continue to make games and improve where they fall short. Wildgate is available for purchase and will remain so if you wanna give it a try. The community of the game would gladly receive you, and at the time of the writing of this article, the game is on sale, so why not give it a go, as they will have one last big update in July.
