Mom Goes Viral for Dominating Pokemon Tournament

A tweet thread by storyboard artist @CarolineDirectr tells the story of how her mom Pam dominated her first Pokemon tournament at Core Trading Card Games (TCG for short)  in Pasadena, CA. The tournament was held as a pre-release for the new Sword and Sheild expansion packs.

Pam reportedly asked her daughter if it was ok for her to watch the Pokemon tournament, but Caroline taught her mother the ropes on how to play just in case she wanted to join in.

What nobody expected was for Pam to finish in the top 8 of the tournament, beating her daughter in a 1v1 in the third round. The tournament had towards 40 competitors, and the final photo shows Pam next to the other top competitors as she gleefully holds her prize.

The heartwarming story goes deeper as Caroline describes how her mother just wanted to join in on the action even though she was not all too familiar with Pokemon.

“She was calling Raichu ‘Rikkuhchu’ and Salandit ‘Sizzle’ all while owning her opponents.”

This clearly did not stop Pam’s conquest as she finished the tournament with a handful of booster packs.

Caroline’s tweet thread managed to catch the eyes of other Pokemon fans on Twitter, as her comments are filled with praises and admiration for her mom. Caroline has also tweeted a link that allows all of Pam’s fans the chance to follow her on Instagram and Twitter as well.

The new Sword and Shield expansion pack are changing some big rules for the TCG, including removing the use of fairy types from the game, as the Pokemon Company states;

 “Pokemon that are Fairy types in the Pokémon video game series will now generally be represented as Psychic-type Pokemon in the Pokemon TCG. To maintain a balance among types, Pokemon that are Poison types in the video games will now be represented as Darkness types instead of Psychic types. For the time being, basic Fairy Energy can still be used in the Standard format, but that may change in the future.”

The Sword and Shield games are also receiving two new DLC’s, which bring even more new Pokemon to the Galar Region.
