Molea Cemetery Becomes a Permanent Feature in Eve Online

Starting out a memorial for players that have died in Eve Online, individual player capsuleers have been collecting the corpses across New Eden and even started adding memorials for players who have died in real life. Molea Cemetery is a player-owned starport orbiting Molea II. The starport is surrounded by thousands of gravestones, being the only dedicated cemetery in-game.

Being a player-owned structure, Molea Cemetery has been subjected to collateral damages as faction wars rip through the system or opportunistic players that would rather build their own structure there. Maintaining Molea Cemetery has been a task taken on by Azia Burgi, and they’re the only gravekeeper in EVE Online, a project that has been going on for nine years. A project that has been a challenge to juggle between repairs and scouring the system for player graves to collect.

“Here Lies Jelica Zajc, 1929-2017, Loved Grandmother – RIP,” reads some of the markers, “Here Lies Choronzon Eaterofworls RIP 1977-2017 I’m devastated.” Along with in-game corpses, some people added stones for the passing of players, giving Molea Cemetery the same significance of cemeteries in reality and a bit of a tourist attraction for people who wanted to see the mausoleums.

As Eve Online is taking a new change as player-owned starports are being dropped in favor of citadels, Molea Cemetery’s viability was put into question as the loose graves would be subjected to despawning, which was prevented by being close to the starport. With the new change, CCP Games will be taking over the role of Azia Burgi. Instead of the starport, a permanent tribute will be placed instead. The memorial features three basaltic columns and two figures leaving the pod in a ray of light at the center which represents the fallen players. Periodically, the tribute will have its own light show

Just like with previous starports, items dropped with a 200-kilometer sphere will be permanently anchored in the game space, saving all of the collected graves. Azia Burgi and her organization will still be accepted contracts to collect, store and catalog graves and memorials at the new structure, Molea Cemetery 2.

Griffin Gilman: Gaming may very well be half of my personality, so it is only natural that I write about them. The best genre is RPGs, while the best game is Nier Automata. That's not an opinion but a matter of facts.
