According to Kotaku, The Wall Street Journal recently reported on the possibility of a Legend of Zelda game coming to mobile devices. This game would follow in the footsteps of Nintendo’s other properties that have gotten mobile games, such as Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, Miitomo and the immensely successful Pokémon GO.
Supposedly, the Zelda mobile game is scheduled to come out some time after the mobile Animal Crossing game that Nintendo has been teasing for a while now, but which has had its release date pushed back several times. In its report, The Wall Street Journal says that the Animal Crossing game is now set to be released in the second half of 2017. It is also mentioned that the release date of the Zelda mobile game could be changed, so it is also possible that the Zelda game gets released before the Animal Crossing game and that Animal Crossing gets pushed back yet again.
Much is still unknown about this alleged mobile Zelda game, however. Nintendo has declined to comment to either The Wall Street Journal or Kotaku and Kotaku states that The Wall Street Journal report has not yet been confirmed. Additionally, it is unknown as to whether the mobile Zelda game will be a port of an existing Zelda game or if it will be an entirely new take on the franchise. Though known to be a home console franchise, Zelda has proven its formula can work on handheld devices as well with entries such as Link’s Awakening and A Link Between Worlds. Given Nintendo’s recent shift in attention to mobile games, as well as the popularity of The Legend of Zelda franchise, it may be just a matter of time before we find out if Zelda can work as a mobile game as well.
