Mojang has announced a release date for Minecraft‘s upcoming “Tricky Trials” update, with the free expansion dropping on June 13. The update (for Java users, Minecraft 1.21) will release for all systems in both the Bedrock and Java editions of the game, and adds a ton of new content. New enemies, blocks, paintings, and more will be added with the update, but the biggest part of the update are the new “trial chamber” structures coming to the game.
Trial chambers are mysterious copper structures found randomly generated in your world, which contain new mobs and opt-in challenges that reward players with loot. Trials can be completed solo or with multiple players, but the amount of players attempting a trial will increase its “chaoticness”. At the end of your challenge, all players in the trial will receive loot from the new block called “the vault”, which is unlocked via a trial key that you earn from clearing a trial (defeating all the mobs in the chamber). Optional modifiers will increase difficulty, and also the quality of loot. The trial chambers will also introduce two new hostile mobs: the breeze, a powerful enemy that sends players flying, and the bogged, a poisonous variant of skeletons covered in moss. The trial chambers will feature new banners, armor trims, and pottery shards for players to collect as well.
In addition to trial chambers, players will be able to craft a new tool: the mace. This melee weapon emphasizes the game’s “fall-attack” mechanic, increasing damage the higher your character falls before landing a hit. Three new enchantments will be available exclusively for the mace: density, breach, and wind charge. The materials to build a mace will only be able to be found in the new trial chambers, so get your diamond swords ready! A ton of new blocks will be added to the game as well, the most notable of which is the “crafter”, a new redstone-enabled block that enables automatic crafting without player interaction. Set a recipe, attach a hopper with the materials, give it a redstone signal, and the crafter will begin converting materials into the item of your choice! A plethora of new copper blocks like the copper bulb, door, trapdoor, grate, and chiseled block will be added, each of them with oxidized variants. Also added to the game are new craftable tuff blocks, with stairs, slabs, and chiseled versions of the deep dark material to add to your building arsenal. 20 new painting designs will also be added to the game, 15 of which are from original Minecraft painting artist Kristoffer Zetterstand.
