A charity project known as Clinic Craft is aiming to raise funds for the construction of a clinic in Liberia through sponsoring a Minecraft building competition. Participants are challenged to design a virtual clinic in Swedish independent developer Mojang AB’s immensely popular sandbox building game in order to help raise awareness for their campaign to build a maternity clinic for new mothers and their children in rural Liberia.
Clinic Craft is a joint project between Chris Doney and Dan Maher. Working with British public relation firm The Good Agency and creative agency Explosive Alan Productions, the two hope to draw attention to their cause through reaching out to the Minecraft community. The Clinic Craft project provides aspiring Minecraft architects with the basic blueprints for a virtual clinic, which can then be customized and expanded upon to the player’s liking in the game. At the end of the event, awards such as tee shirts, mugs, and plush Minecraft creatures will be awarded to Doney and Maher’s favorite clinic designers.
The Clinic Craft project is aimed at raising awareness of the lack of readily available, quality healthcare in developing nations such as Liberia. Donations made through Clinic Craft will be sent to charitable organization Save The Children, whose No Child Born to Die campaign has sought to reduce deaths from preventable diseases amongst newborns and infants across the globe since 2011. Money raised during the event will be put towards the construction and staffing of a clinic in rural Liberia specializing in the care of young children and their mothers. Scott Clarkson, special projects manager at Save the Children, calls Clinic Craft a “truly thrilling project” that he hopes will “help connect with a whole new group of people” and remains optimistic that the fundraising project can produce tangible results from a digital competition.
The Clinic Craft competition is set to run until September 26, 2014. The official contest is open only to residents of the United Kingdom, however the project encourages participation and donations from outside the region.
