In the 2020 Minecraft Live, the developers from Mojang had originally revealed archeology. This included bundles and structures that allowed players to find dig sites. They hinted at brushes and ancient structures that had the potential for players to discover hidden artifacts. This update was supposed to be with the Cave and Cliffs update with Deep Dark, however, it was pushed back due to the pandemic. After not coming out for both parts of the Cave and Cliffs update and the Wild Update fans had assumed that Mojang had completely got rid of the idea.
However, Minecraft Developer Ulraf on Twitter had hinted the update was coming back by tweeting:
A new 1.20 feature in this Snapshot: Playable Mob Heads! And we’re just getting warmed up 🤩 I’m getting hyped!!!
This update gonna be awesome when it’s all done and dusted! Are you excited to see what else we’re gonna dig up for you?? https://t.co/7zThgLSs17

“We’re looking for a special type of sand today. Pick a nice plot near some desert temples and start shoveling. As we continue to work on archeology, more dig site areas will be added,” stated Mojang’s announcement. Some of the additions that Mojang is adding in 1.20 is the suspicious sand, brushes, and pottery shards. The pottery shards can be used to create a vase and it is completely customizable. Some of these illustrations include a skeleton face, a diamond, a bow and arrow, and a player. “Once you collect four shards, you can put them together for a pot! There are different patterns that tell unique stories and make for very decorative accents in your builds,” Mojang said. The major difference compared to the Minecraft 2020 live is the removal of the color from the pottery shards.
The developers also hint at a new location in a game “the secret library that I found and now officially live in is filled with them.” Will there be a new additional library besides the one in the stronghold?
Currently, there is no date for when the official Minecraft 1.20 update will be released.
