Minecraft and Alien Worlds Bridge Gap between Traditional Gaming and Social Metaverse Gaming

Minecraft, the best-selling video game in history, now allows its players the opportunity to earn Trilium (TLM), the native cryptocurrency in the Alien Worlds metaverse. This collaboration is an important step because it joins decentralized games to social metaverse gaming. “This bridge is significant in that we are linking one of the world’s most popular decentralized games to the blockchain, and opening up a world of new possibilities for Minecraft players through our social metaverse,” says Alien Worlds co-founder Saro McKenna. “We think our combination of economics, team strategy and earning will convert Minecraft players of all ages into Web3 players.”

Alien Worlds was launched in 2020 and has grown to be the second-largest blockchain platform by monthly active users. The goal of the game is to compete for the scarce TLM, which is the currency used to enhance a player’s power by staking and voting in Planet DAOs. A Decentralized Autonomous Organization is described in simple terms as an organization represented by rules encoded on a computer program and is controlled by shareholders rather than a central government. Players can also utilize unique digital items (NFTs) and travel on Alien Worlds Missions to other planets and run for planetary council. Within the game, there are 6 planet DAOs that encourage user collaboration. If Minecraft players stake their earned TLM, they will have the opportunity to earn assets and soon NFTs for completing quests. TLM can be freely exchanged to be turned into real-world utility through Alien World’s simulated economy. If players take the TLM and stake it in one of Alien Worlds’ DAOs, they will have access to some of the largest treasuries in the space. Staked TLM translates into voting power to determine control of planetary treasures.

This collaboration will influence those who do not typically play or understand blockchain games into joining the Alien Worlds metaverse. Because of the open-sourced nature of the code, it may empower other Minecraft servers to earn play-to-earn rewards which in turn allows other blockchain projects to tap into Minecraft’s vast user base. Minecraft players who range in all ages will be able to learn about DAOs and also participate in the collaborative, competitive and highly strategic environment that their gamification entails.

This is not the first time Minecraft has been introduced to blockchain. In January of 2022, GAIMIN announced plug-in and metaverse environment that enables blockchain technology and NFTs to be used within Minecraft. GAIMIN is a base layer for gamers and game studios to build NFTs, blockchain functionality and more into gaming platforms that utilize it. Later in February, GAIMIN launched this plug-in to deliver a dedicated metaverse for its Minecraft players and enable them to utilize NFTs and blockchain-based components within Minecraft. The bridge linking Minecraft and Alien Worlds, however, is the first of its kind to do this and may only further prove that gaming is a key role in the development of metaverse platforms.
