The gaming landscape is once again on verge of a massive change as the most important positions for Xbox will soon be occupied by completely new leadership. Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, will be retiring, leaving the position to Asha Sharma, president of Microsoft’s CoreAI. Many considered the position would be left to Sarah Bond, the current Xbox President once Spencer retired. In another unexpected shift, however, she will be resigning herself. Stepping up as the Xbox Chief Content Officer will be Matt Booty.

Initially reported by IGN from information provided by Microsoft emails, Spencer has been recently “thinking about stepping back and starting the next chapter of my life.” His departure comes on very good terms, with the CEO of Microsoft Satya Nadella thanking Spencer for his many contributions and ensuring that positions were transferred smoothly.

All of the statements available from the emails also indicate the immense hope and faith that everyone involved has in the new Xbox leadership. Spencer says that Sharma “brings genuine curiosity, clarity and a deep commitment to understanding players, creators, and the decisions that shape our future.” He also expresses gratitude for having the chance to work with her. In her emails. Sharma states that Xbox will move forward with three goals, including, “great games”, “the return of Xbox”, and the “future of play.” Those goals seek to improve general gameplay over releases, support of dedicated Xbox fans, and making sure to innovate and create new ways to play. Matt Booty also vouches for Sharma’s abilities, stating that she “asks questions, pushes for clarity, and wants our choices grounded in player and developer needs.”

Since earning the position of Microsoft Gaming CEO, Phil Spencer has made an impact on the success of the company, its games, and its fans. While some may be left uncertain about Xbox’s future with him leaving, they can look forward to the ambitious goals that the new leadership has in store.
