Microsoft has recently confirmed to media outlets that they are officially discontinuing production of their Kinect adapter. This accessory is required for players who own an Xbox One, Xbox One S, or Xbox One X and wish to connect the Kinect sensor onto the console. A spokesperson for Microsoft said in a statement, “After careful consideration, we decided to stop manufacturing the Xbox Kinect Adapter to focus attention on launching new, higher fan-requested gaming accessories across Xbox One and Windows 10.”
When asked if the product had a chance of returning sometime in the future, the spokesperson said that they will not be giving out any information on the company’s future plans for products, but specifically stated that the Kinect adapter “will no longer be available.” In retrospect, the adapter has been out of stock at many retailers like Amazon, GameStop, Best Buy, and even the Microsoft Store. Even if one goes to the Microsoft Store website and attempts to search for “Kinect,” the adapter will no longer show up.
This in turn gave many consumers reason to believe that Microsoft had decided a while ago to discontinue the item. As for the actual Kinect itself, Microsoft officially announced that they had discontinued production for it back in October of 2017, but stated, “It is not the end of the journey for the technology because Kinect continues to delight tens of millions of Xbox owners.” But with the discontinuation of the adapter for current generation consoles, it seems that the company has made their final step to move on from the Kinect.
