Microsoft Bringing Adaptive Controllers To Injured Veterans

Last year, Microsoft unveiled their all new adaptive Xbox controller. The company partnered with several organizations such as AbleGamers Charity, The Cerebral Palsy Foundation, SpecialEffect, Warfighter Engaged in order to design the device to make gaming easier and more accessible to individuals suffering from disabilities.

The controller is extremely customizable being able to connect to various devices as well as having numerous button remapping options. The controller is able to be used on Xbox consoles as well as window 10 PCs. Since the controllers hit shelves last September, Microsoft has taken another step in making gaming more accessible to those with disabilities. They are now expanding their reach to those who serve our country.

It has just been announced that The US Department of Veterans Affairs has officially signed a deal with Microsoft to bring the adaptive controller, Xbox consoles, and “other adaptive gaming equipment” to over 20 VA rehab centers across the United States.

It’s safe to say that there are many members of the military who love playing video games, but for some, who have unfortunately been injured during their service, it can be a little difficult for them to enjoy them the way they once did. With this partnership, Microsoft aims to fix that problems and make it easier for veterans to start playing again!

“This partnership is another step toward achieving VA’s strategic goals of providing excellent customer experiences and business transformation,” VA Secretary Robert Wilkie said. VA staff will stand ready to help those using the equipment while providing feedback to Microsoft about the effectiveness of the program as well as the “veteran experience.” In addition to the rehab centers, the equipment will also be available at events hosted by the VA’s Office of National Veterans Sports Programs and Special Events, such as the National Veterans Wheelchair Games.
