Earlier this year, Microsoft announced the HoloLens 2, a new iteration of their mixed reality headset. Now, the company has unveiled a new version of that headset aimed specifically at developers. The HoloLens 2 Development Edition will be available to those who join or are part of the Microsoft Mixed Reality Developer Program.

For those that want to purchase the Development Edition of the HoloLens 2, the headset will cost an astounding $3500 USD. If that seems a bit too costly, then good news, Microsoft will allow monthly payments of $99 USD per month. The HoloLens 2 Development Edition will also be limited to one per customer unlike the other versions of the HoloLens 2. Aside from the headset, the Development Edition will also include $500 USD in Microsoft Azure credits. It will also include three month free trials for Unity Pro and the Unity PiXYZ Plugin for CAD data. Microsoft assures all these pieces combine to help developers create the best experiences.
Bringing together HoloLens 2, Azure Mixed Reality Services, and Unity Pro, the most widely used real-time 3D development platform, makes it easy for developers to create professional mixed reality experiences using your industrial design data.
Microsoft continued describing the value of the extras that come with the Development Edition stating, “The PiXYZ Plugin gives you the tools to create real-time experiences using Computer Aided Drawing (CAD) or Building Information Management (BIM) data.”
For those that aren’t developers that are interested in the HoloLens 2, there are two other versions of the headset that people can purchase. The headset itself is available to purchase alone for the $3500 USD price point. There is also a version that comes with Dynamics 365 Remote Assist. This version can be paid for in monthly install ments of $125 per user per month.
There is currently no planned release date for the HoloLens 2, so those interested will have to wait for a bit to get it in their hands.
