During the E3 2019 event, developer Metronomik participated in an interview with IGN to talk more about their music-based action-adventure game, No Straight Roads. The story takes place in Vinyl City, currently being controlled by “evil” Electronic Dance Music (EDM) led by Tatiana, leader of the NSR (No Straight Roads) record label. Players will assist bandmates Mayday (the guitarist) and Zuke (the drummer) in taking back their city with the power of rock.

In the interview, Wan Hazmer, CEO and Game Director at Metronomik, along with James Ladino, the game’s Composer, explain the inspiration behind their project as well as what can be expected from the game. The duo revealed gameplay of the tutorial as well as a boss battle for No Straight Roads. While it may appear as a simple fighting game, Hazmer and Ladino explain that paying close attention to the music will give the player an advantage in combat.
Music is under-utilized in game design. Everyone loves music, but not everyone can be a musician. We bring the harmony of music and video game to the masses, without turning them into a rhythm game We do this by having the world follow the music within the context of a proper action game similar to Nier Automata, Kingdom Hearts, and Devil May Cry; The difference is that you have a huge advantage in this game if you understand the relationship between the boss attacks and the music.
Ladino mentioned that the game will not only include music from EDM and rock but will also include music from a variety of sub-genres, such as classical and electronic. When explaining how music was incorporated into the boss fights, he states that “as the player defeats the bosses, and plays in their own playstyle, the music will change and adapt based on what actions they do.”
No Straight Roads will be playable on the PlayStation 4 and PC. Metronomik has not yet revealed any estimate window for a possible release period, however, the game is confirmed to launch sometime in early 2020.
