Mario Movie Sequel and Release Dates Announced for MAR10 Day 2024

Nintendo has announced a sequel to this year’s Super Mario Bros. Movie alongside release dates for previously announced games in the Mario series on March 10 to celebrate MAR10 Day.

Nintendo will once again be collaborating with Illumination to produce the film, which was described by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto in the film’s announcement video as “a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario.” Though it was not explicitly stated to be a full sequel, with past rumors referencing a potential Donkey Kong spinoff, a few details in the announcement suggest that it will be a proper sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Though not much was shared, directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic have been confirmed to be returning from the first film, and are currently in the storyboarding stage with plans to begin animation soon. A release date was set for April 3, 2026 in the US and other territories, with the rest getting it throughout April 2026.

Release dates were also set for two upcoming remasters for spinoffs of the main Mario series. The remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will release on May 23, 2024, and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD will release on June 27, 2024. Later this week on March 12, Dr. MarioMario Golf, and Mario Tennis will be released on Nintendo Switch Online’s Game Boy app.

Finally, Nintendo and LEGO announced yesterday that LEGO’s Super Mario line would be receiving sets based on Mario Kart. The teaser doesn’t show off much, but confirms that it will continue to use the electronic system of play that the line has used up to this point. The wave of sets will launch sometime in 2025.

As previously announced, Nintendo will also be providing a 14-day free trial of the Nintendo Switch Online service, and a variety of games from the Super Mario series will be on sale in the Nintendo eShop.

Alex Andahazy: I have been playing games since my childhood, and am constantly looking to expand my horizons. I have always been a Nintendo fan at heart, but in recent years I've moved to a much wider variety of genres and platforms.
