Mario Kart Tour‘s servers will be shut down by September 29th of this year, marking the end of its multi-year lifespan. The mobile Mario Kart game was released on September 25th of 2019, and will shut down shortly after its 7 year anniversary. Mario Kart Tour was Nintendo’s first and only attempt at a mobile game in the Mario Kart series, and many wonder why they’ve decided to shut the game down in the first place.
Mario Kart Tour‘s FAQ provides more information on the shutdown. The game will officially come to an end at 11:00 PM Pacific Time, on September 29th, meaning that fans of the mobile racing game have a bit of time to play before the game’s online services are put to an end. Moreover, Nintendo has ended the sale of rubies, the premium in-game currency in Mario Kart Tour, as well as ended all subscriptions of the Gold Pass. The Gold Pass essentially gave players who paid a monthly fee access to more gameplay options, content, challenges, and more.
Many players of Mario Kart Tour are upset by the decision Nintendo has come to. Those who have played the mobile racing game since the beginning and beyond are upset to see the game go. But, they’re also upset that the characters and items they worked or even paid for are going along with the game. Many are asking if there is a point to continue playing when the game’s services end so soon. Some are even unsurprised, as Nintendo stopped making new content like characters and tracks for the game in 2023. Nintendo hasn’t given a reason for the shut down in their initial announcement, nor their FAQ. One thing is for certain though, Nintendo’s decision has left fans of Mario Kart Tour spiraling. Many fans are saddened, disappointed, or even angry at the decision Nintendo has made for the game. Hopefully fans will enjoy the time they’ll have left with Mario Kart Tour, before the servers shut down for good.
