Man Killed in San Francisco While Playing Pokémon Go

Pokémon Go has had its ups and downs and that doesn’t just include game play. All future legendary Pokémon been removed from the game thanks to hoax about a Dayton couple capturing ArticunoPokémon Go was banned in Iran and Pokémon extermination is apparently thing now. But what really takes the cake is that a 20-year-old man was shot and killed while playing the game.

Calvin Riley of San Mateo, California was shot in the chest at Aquatic Park, a popular tourist attraction in San Francisco near Ghirardelli Square, according to Gamespot. From first glance, it appears that Riley was a random target and that there was no confrontation before the shooting thanks to eye witness account from family friend John Kirby, who was playing the game with him and another friend at the time.

There was nothing said back and forth. It was just senseless, just came up and shot in the back and ran away for nothing.

Kirby told KGO-TV that Riley was being watched by a man on a hill, but they were too engrossed in the game for them to really take notice. When the shooting happened, Riley was ahead of the group. When Riley’s friend turned the corner, he heard the gun shot and saw Riley fall. The shooter then ran away possibly getting into a car.

A Gofundme account in support of Riley and his family created by Riley’s cousin Gabriel Morales. It has gathered over $51,000, exceeding its goal of $50,000. The description says that the money will be going to Riley’s funeral expenses.

Riley was star baseball player and played for San Joaquin Delta College in California.

The gunman, who is currently unknown at this time did not rob Riley of any of his possessions according to Sgt. Robert Jansing, a detective for the US Park Police. It is also believed that there are more witnesses to the shooting, as the shooting took place in a busy setting.

Bryan Ingram: My name is Bryan. I just graduated from High Point University with a degree in Journalism. I'm 25 and writing has always been a part of my life. I'm a big Pokémon fan, so I'l spend a lot of my time playing that. Other than that, I love sports, particularly the Charlotte Hornets and the Carolina Panthers. No matter how bad the team is, I will always rep them.
