Wizards of the Coast has unveiled a full look at the next chapter in The Lord of the Rings – Tales of Middle-earth series. The full set of The Hobbit comes equipped Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, alongside bundles, gift bundles, and pre-release sets. Wizards of the Coast highlighted several themes of cards that players can expect to see in the set as well as two iconic scenes for the scene box, and has talked about some of the new keyword and mechanics coming to the set. Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit releases on August 14, 2026.
All of the themed cards are centered around the different factions present in The Hobbit, elves, royalty, and the distinct creatures, weapons, and equipment that are only present in J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy world.
One of the new mechanics coming with The Hobbit is recruit. Players will draw a card and then discard a card. If the player discarded a nonland card, they will create a 1/1 white human soldier creature token. Another new mechanic coming into the set is called Storied. Players who control three or more artifacts, legendaries, and/or Sagas, an enduring story remains for the rest of the game. Artifacts and creatures a player controls have ward 1 as long as an enduring story is in play.
Another new mechanic coming with this set is called hone counter. Hone counters attach to equipment. Each hone counter on the equipment grants +1/+0 to the equipped creature. There is also the return of the Amass mechanic, giving players a certain number of creatures at a time.
Adventures also make a return. Adventures come in two parts, the first part is a permanent and the other is either an instant or sorcery.
Dwarish language cards capture a moment from The Hobbit on a famous card from Magic’s past. These 5 Dwarvish cards are only available in Collector Boosters
To celebrate Magic’s return to Middle-earth, they are releasing 40 borderless Middle-earth classic artist cards that were originally part of The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set back in 2023. There are 40 mythic rare Middle-earth classic artist cards. Each Magic: The Gathering | The Hobbit Play Booster box and Collector Booster box includes a Box Topper that contains 1 traditional foil Middle-earth classic artist card. Non-foil and surge foil Middle-earth classic artist cards appear in Collector Boosters.
As with every set, there are special types of cards that are specific to that set. For The Hobbit, players can also get some cards looking like a book cover. Each cover features stylized artwork with rules text to match.
Dragon hord frame cards put together famous characters and moments from The Hobbit in a special frame inspired by the Dragon Smaug.
The two Scene Boxes feature two of the most iconic parts in the story. The first was the Feast where the Dwarves inch Bilbo every more to go on an adventure.
The second Scene Box set is centered on the heist in Dwaren Vault, where Bilbo and the Dwarves encounter Smaug for the first time.
