The land of light and shadow is back with the return of Lorwyn Eclipsed. The next major and first set of 2026 for Magic: The Gathering releases in a few weeks on January 23, 2026. Wizards of the Coast has shared more information and a look at some of the cards for the set.
With the return of Lorwyn and Shadowmoor comes the return of the mechanics of the set.
Vivid is an ability word that highlights abilities that care in some way about the number of colors among the pernaments a player controls. The number will be between zero and five. Each vivid ability will use this number in a different way.
Blight is a new keyword action that will put -1/-1 counters on cards. Blight includes a number and is often phrased as a cost players will pay.
Cards with the Changeling keyword allow cards to be every creature type. This applies no matter where the card with changeling is.
Kindred is a card type that’s added to noncreature cards to allow them to have creature types.
Double-faced cards feature two Magic card faces: a front face and a back face. The double-faced cards in the Lorwyn Eclipsed set are nonmodal double-faced cards, previously known as transforming double-faced cards.
There are also returning mechanics that will appear on a small set of cards. This includes Convoke, Behold, Evoke, and Persist.
Cards with the Convoke keyword have the ability to use untapped creatures to pay for the mana cost of the card. This includes creatures that just came under a player’s control this turn.
Some cards will ask players to behold something, usually a creature type. Players will have to either choose a permanent they control or reveal a card from their hand that fits the description.
Evoke is an alternate cost on some permanent cards. When players choose to cast a spell for its evoke cost, an ability triggers when it enters, forcing players to sacrifice it.
Creatures with presist will return to the battlefield under its owner control with a -1/-1 counter on it if it died without -1/-1 counters on it. Players will have it get rid of the negative counters in order for the creature to presist again.
Artist Rebecca Guay returns with new art for this set with a serialized version of Bitterbloom Bearer. This version only appears in Collector Boosters.
Special Guest cards reimagine some of the favorite cards from Magic history under the sun and moon of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor.
Beloved Magic artists from the Lorwyn and Shadowmoor blocks are making their return on select borderless cards from this set. Each card brings artists who worked on the first vist to the plane. These cards will be available in both non-foil and traditional foil in Play and Collector Boosters.
Special borderless shock lands show off both sides of the plane on a single card. One side is Lorwyn, the other is Shadowmoor.
Lorwyn Eclipsed is available to preorder now.
