Hot on the heels of the blockbuster success of Magic: The Gathering’s Universes Beyond Final Fantasy set, we are also now about to be blessed with another expansion set for the venerable collectible card game, Edge of Eternities. We recently took part in a special media preview where Executive Producer Mike Turian, Senior Art Director Sarah Wassell, Senior Story Lead Roy Graham, Principal Game Designer Jadine Klomparens and Ian Adams from Magic Arena walked us through some of the special mechanics and key features from the new set.

Edge of Eternities is a new approach for Magic, as it is an entirely deep space / science fiction theme for the fiction. Everything is a wonderful and luminous nod to the many generations of science fiction fantasy and writing the world has enjoyed. We were shown a brief glimpse into how certain archetypes in Magic such as dragons and ‘goyfs have been adapted for this setting in the way of cards like Cosmogoyf and Nova Hellkite. Most prominently, is the impressive legendary enchantment Sothera, the Supervoid, a creature devouring black hole that eventually pops one of those creatures back for you. Sothera comes in numerous templates including the regular art plate, a full-art showcase and the super rare (but not serialized) Singularity Foil treatment. Each of the three is just luminous. And that’s definitely the case for most of the Edge of Eternities set.

One of the exciting new mechanics in this set is Station which works much like the Crew ability introduced a few years ago. Only in this version, you have to cumulatively tap creates as a sorcery effect, their power being applied in the way of charge counters. Once enough charge counters have been accumulated, a new, wild ability is unlocked on the card. Two lands featuring the ability we’re shown, Uthros, Titanic Godcore and Susur Secundi, Void Altar, are both jaw-droppingly well designed and kind of gnarly when factored into existing Magic deck possibilities. This set also features the return of the dual-variant, affectionately referred to as shock lands (called that as in order to have them be usable for either color at the moment they’re put into play you have to pay two life otherwise they come into play tapped).

We got to see some examples of the Station ability in cards such as The Seriema and Extinguisher Battleship (the latter of which is just ridiculously strong as it becomes a 10/10 flying trample creature once it’s been powered up by five). We also got to see some cards such as Exalted Sunborn which were examples of the new mechanic Warp. Warp is a lot kike the mechanic Adventure where you can take an action with the card and it goes to exile, but with the possibility of being cast again in its main form. With Warp though, the whole card comes in with all of its Enters the Battlefield effects before leaving for exile at the end step, and ultimately possible to bring back fully from exile for its regular casting cost on a subsequent turn. This set is a feast for collectors of beautiful art as the Borderless Stellar Sights cards feature numerous art plates for reprints of some of the game’s most helpful lands such as Ancient Tomb, Dust Bowl, Gemstone Caverns, Blinkmoth Nexus, Crystal Quarry and more. These telescopic viewports are luminous.

That’s not all for diehard collectors, as this set’s special guest cards feature throwback pulp science fiction novel treatments in cards such as Magus of the Moon, Paradox Haze, Sliver Overlord and Warping Wait. For those that are afficionados of Commander, the game’s currently most popular format, there’s also approximately 200 plus new Commander cards that are a part of the set treatment. This set is truly one for those that love inspired art, and we can’t wait to get our hands on this set when it comes out on August 1st 2025, this coming Friday.
