M2 Co., Ltd. has announced the cancellation of Ubusuna, a shoot ’em up in development at the studio since its announcement in 2014. Representative Director Naoki Horii confirmed the decision on May 24, 2026.
Ubusuna was led by Hiroshi Iuchi, the director behind Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga. Updates on the game were rare across its lifespan. In 2022, M2 shared artwork and released a soundtrack EP for the project, which was the last substantial public update before the cancellation. Following the decision to halt development, the studio made the soundtrack EP video no longer available on its YouTube channel.
According to Horii, Iuchi submitted his resignation from M2 under what the company describes as a mutual agreement. Following his departure, M2 explored ways to continue the project and concluded that doing so was not possible. “Although we explored ways to continue this project following Mr. Iuchi’s departure, we came to the conclusion that, given the nature of the work, it would be difficult to bring Ubusuna to its complete form without him,” Horii wrote. “We have therefore decided that we must abandon further development.” Horii’s statement extended apologies to fans in Japan and abroad who had been waiting for the game, external creators who contributed to the project, and media outlets that cooperated with M2’s PR efforts. He asked the public to refrain from speculation and defamatory posts on social media, noting that the situation has had a significant emotional and physical impact on those involved with the project and at the company.
Horii also noted that Iuchi “has not given up all hope of completing UBUSUNA, independent of M2,” and expressed hope that Iuchi would find an opportunity to resume work on the project in some form. Ubusuna was first announced for PS4 in 2014. Iuchi’s most recent directing credit at M2 was Night Striker Gear, released in October 2025.
M2’s full cancellation notice is available through the studio’s official Bluesky account.
