You think it would be animated. But you’re wrong.
Sonic the Hedgehog, long time spokesperson of those who’ve adopted “gotta go fast” as their mantra, as well as the star of a flood of comical memes and videos, is about to see his first Live Action Feature Film.
You read that right: Live Action.
Let it set in. Don’t fight it.
It’s happening whether we like it or not.
The film is being funded by both Sony and Sonic’s original creator, Sega. In an interview given to The World Folio, President and CEO of the Sega Sammy Holdings Inc, Hajime Satomi, stated that the film will be Sega’s next great attempt to reach Sonic’s newest audience within the next generation:
Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved.
The film will also use animation alongside the live action footage. Despite this, however, fans and the general population of the internet are unable to stop themselves from wincing at the news. In the recent past, Sonic games have become more and more seemingly outrageous and critically panned across the board (ie: the disaster that was the Shadow The Hedgehog game–remember when he had a gun??–and the nightmare fueled Sonic Unleashed. I still have PTSD from that one).
Cringe-worthy at best, this development does not have a lot of us cheering. Brace yourselves, I can read the film’s tagline now: In a world where you gotta go fast….
Stay sane, guys, more updates soon.
