Earlier today, Limited Run Games’ CEO Josh Fairhurst announced via the PlayStation Blog that the company is teaming up with Sony Interactive Entertainment and Naughty Dog to release physical Standard and Collector Editions of the PlayStation 2’s Jak and Daxter series on PlayStation 4.
The first game in the series, Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, receives its limited release today. The first batch of copies of the game is already available with a second batch releasing at 6:00 PM EST/3:00 PM PST. The total of both batches of the game will be limited to 5000 Standard Editions and 2500 Collector Editions. The game is available on Limited Run Games’ official website, and will cost $24.99 for the Standard Edition and $74.99 for the Collector’s Edition. Fans who order the game should expect their copies by February 28, 2019. Releases of Jak II, Jak 3, and Jak X will come at a later date.
“Each game’s Collector’s Edition will include a special item that ties into the game,” according to Fairhurst. The Collector’s Edition of Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy is set to include a decorative statue in the shape of the game’s Precursor Orbs, a USB drive shaped like a classic PlayStation 2 memory card, a poster, soundtrack, trading card set, and a design archive that, according to Fairhurst, will include “never-before-seen historical documents.”
In what is the most surprising announcement made, fans who order all four games in the series, Standard or Collector’s Editions, will receive a a mock case for “the game that never was” Jak 4. Though Jak 4 never came to be due to Naughty Dog focusing on the Uncharted and The Last of Us games, the company was working on the title at one point. The mock case for the game will include a special PlayStation 4 theme based on Naughty Dog’s early concept art for the game. The mock case will be delivered to those who bought all four games sometime after June 30, 2019.
