The story trailer, which runs for approximately 10 minutes. showcases the main protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga, who is on a trip to Hawaii in order to find his long lost mother. It also has a bit of a shocker, former protagonist Kazuma Kiriyu, who is back once again in a supporting capacity. However, a major bombshell is dropped by Kiriyu, he has cancer. Kasuga and Kiruyu assist each other as the latter has limited time left, wanting to make amends for his life as a yakuza. The trailer also shows the two battling some wacky opponents, such as a huge chark and a giant squid. Only in the Like a Dragon franchise will we see a combination of serious moments and hilarious antics go hand in hand.
The gameplay trailer, which runs at around five minutes, shows Kasuga interacting with the people around the area, similar to past entries in the franchise. The combat is exactly the same as the last iteration, using the JRPG turn-based mechanics along with the classical Job System that allows characters to use special abilities unique to their own job class. Actors Danny Trejo and Danny Dae Kim will also make an appearance in the game as two specific characters, Dwight, the leader of Hawaiian mafia group and Masataka Ebina who is a captain of a yakuza faction.
Before we even get to this newest entry, fans will still have one more chance to play as Kiryu in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, which launches on November 9, 2024. Acting as a side story to the main series, it details what happened to Kiryu after the events of Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, in which he fakes his death in order to give his family a chance at a happy life.
