League of Legends: Wild Rift is Awarded the 2021 iPhone Game of the Year

The App Store’s end of the year awards have been released and League of Legends: Wild Rift has stolen the show as the iPhone Game of the Year. The App Store says it has won this title because “it transforms one of the world’s most intense and competitive video games into an experience everyone can enjoy.” League of Legends: Wild Rift was originally a PC game, however, not everyone has a PC. By creating a high quality mobile version of the game, the developers, Riot Games, were able to largely increase the amount of players who might have access to this 5v5 multiplayer game.

League of Legends: Wild Rift hit mobile stores in October of 2020, so the game is only little over a year old. For a game this young, this is an impressive achievement. Built from the ground up to run smoothly on mobile, Riot Games clearly took their time to ensure this would be a high quality game. For those that are unfamiliar with the game, the player chooses to play as one of the game characters. Each one has its own strengths and weaknesses. Players on two different teams are scattered throughout a map and must find the enemies to destroy their nexus. The mobile version is less strategic, but still contains some ways to get an advantage on the opponent. The map is divided into three passages to reach the opponent: middle, left, and right. Each lane is different, and some characters are better equipped for specific lanes than others. The matches lasst around 20-25 minutes, which is longer for a mobile game and puts in the realm of something more attractive to more serious, competitive gamers.
