After a couple of leaks earlier this week, Konami has finally let the cat out of the bag and announced that some of their all-time classic video game titles are now available to play on PC through GOG. The collection of games includes Metal Gear, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, and the Konami Collectors Series: Castlevania and Contra which consists of five separate titles from both the Contra and Castlevania franchises. That’s a total of eight Konami classics that are fully optimized for PC, all available on GOG right now.
While not as popular or as well known as it’s sequel series, Metal Gear was a pioneer of the stealth/action genre back in the day. Originally launching on the MXV Home Computer in 1987, the title was later ported to numerous platforms such as the Nintendo Entertainment System. Metal Gear Solid needs no introduction, as it still considered to be one of the greatest video games of all time. Launching for the PlayStation in 1998, the game broke several new grounds for the gaming industry, especially in the stealth and narrative department.
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, which is a newer version of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, follows the pattern of excellent narrative combined with the stealth/action mechanics, but goes even further in terms of making the player question everything about what’s actually going on. Despite the mixed reviews when compared to its predecessor, the game was still a massive success in 2001 when it launched and became one of the must-have titles for the PlayStation 2. The Konami Collectors Series: Castlevania and Contra carries five of the best 8-bit generation games from the NES; Castlevania, Castlevania II: Simons Quest, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, Contra, and Super C.
GOG has stated that all of these titles will be able to be played with or without a controller, as well as being fully updated to be played on current PC builds. This is a rather refreshing thing to see as older games that get ported to PC have an unfortunate history of not being able to either run, not be fully optimized with the current software or operating systems. GOG, which is run by The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 developers/publishers CD Project Red, almost distributes nothing but older/classic titles on their platform, hence the acronym from their full name Good Old Games.
