Last week we reported that data miners located files within the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 collection alluding to a second set. These files all reference the remaining entries in the series which include Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots, Metal Gear Solid 5: Phantom Pain, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. While Konami hasn’t made any official comment in regards to this, they released a “teaser trailer” that more or less hints at a potential second set. This is made even more evident with the fact that longtime and legendary Solid Snake voice actor David Hayter is front and center in the trailer, making Metal Gear Solid fans worldwide go into a frenzy.
The trailer, which only has a runtime of less than a minute, shows Hayter narrating the video while random clips from the Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater are shown. Hayter boasts the series’ longevity and critical acclaim that it has amassed over the years, but seems to be hinting at much more, specifically with the title being showcased in the background. Hayter then ends the teaser with the words “This is only the beginning.” While this is considered an official trailer for the already released Vol 1 collection, the meaning behind Hayter’s words seems to hint at something much more going on.
Hayter’s voice is easily one of the most recognizable within the video game industry. As the original voice of Solid Snake in the very first Metal Gear Solid, Hayter became a household name once the title became one of the most critically acclaimed releases in 1998, and is now considered one of the greatest video games of all time. Hayter would return for the role in most of the sequels, including Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and the handheld titles Metal Portable Ops, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.
He was replaced by Keifer Sutherland in 2015 for Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. These were also the final entries in the series involving creator and director Hideo Kojima as he and Konami had very public split the same year. It’s possible that Hayter will be involved in the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, putting his voice on the legendary hero once again. Hopefully, Konami will have some more news for us soon.
