Konami Discusses Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 Remake, While Talking Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater

The Metal Gear Series is getting a new old addition to its roster: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is getting a remake, hopefully later this year if all continues on schedule. Conversely, fans might want to curb any enthusiasm for a Metal Gear Solid 1 remake. A Famitsu interview translated by Genki and posted to X has given fans more info on a possible remake, mainly that it’s a bit of a pipe dream.

Games in the Metal Gear Solid series pre-Metal Gear Solid 3 were released for much earlier systems: MSX computers and the Nintendo Entertainment System to be precise. As such, any remakes would require a lot of transfer, changes, and building something new. While the Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake, which is actually retitled Metal Gear Solid Delta (stylized as Δ): Snake Eater, has apparently been seen as an extremely faithful remake.

When it comes to remakes, the line between faithfulness and adjustment is quite difficult to walk. In some instances too much deviation leads to an entirely new game, whereas a beat for beat retreading of the original can feel like a cast grab. Few have been able to reach the heights of Resident Evil 4, which updated many parts of the original, but still faced criticism for the changes in tone, or Final Fantasy VII, whose remake has been transformed into a full trilogy in order to expand on the world and craft a narrative to encapsulate the multiple narratives in the compilation of Final Fantasy VII. In the case of Metal Gear Solid Δ:Snake Eater, it doesn’t seem to be the reimagined masterpiece that fans might have expected. Considering the original’s overwhelmingly positive response, this might just offer new fans a chance to experience the original’s story for the first time.

Fans looking for Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater should expect it to be hitting platforms later this year, and for fans looking for Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 remakes they may not be coming anytime soon, but the chance of them coming out isn’t impossible.
