Hisashi Koinuma, president of Koei Tecmo, the company behind Dynasty Warriors, Nioh, as well as the Dead Or Alive franchises was interviewed during a company event about their recent successes, and what they meant for the company currently. Nioh in particular seemed to stand out the most; even though the game was in development for quite some time it seemed to pay off.
“It’s been a while since a new IP became so successful like that. So based on that experience, we definitely want to continue to makes games that offer different challenges that push us. Nioh’s success has had an impact on us.”
Koinuma also commented on the Switch and its success stating that they were committed to the console. “I believe that the Switch was well-received and became popular because it’s really suited for the modern lifestyle, not only in Japan, but the US and also European countries as well.”
Their upcoming title Dynasty Warriors 9 is making a big move for the series by giving players an open world to hack and slash in. Although this is a huge step within its own right the developers are still looking to move onto other IPs.
There are already titles involving The Legend of Zelda, Fire Emblem, and Gundam but, Koinuma stated that he wants to get around making a Star Wars game that fits their style. “I’m always saying this, but I think Star Wars has been really successful and I would love for us to make that game.”
