The medieval setting in games is one of the most versatile when it comes to inspiring mechanics, allowing developers to focus in on small-scale or large-scale development, combat, or strategy. In the Kingdom series by Fury Studios, all of these are a major consideration, historically allowing players to build up their own personal kingdom over time while defending it in strategic combat. The newest game in the series, Kingdom III: Rising Realms was recently announced with an animated story trailer and gameplay preview.
In addition to the reveal trailer, the game’s official website lays out much of the relevant story details needed to enter the new titles. Picking up off of the themes of the previous games, players will assume the role of a ruler called the Monarch in a shattered land. Their ultimate goal will be to restore the kingdom using the Crown of Creation, which grants the magical ability to access legends. The journey of restoration will take players across massive islands, wide plains, and shadowy woods as seen in the animated trailer. Along the way, they will be confronted by the Greed, monsters intent on stealing the Crown and destroying the kingdom in the name of their ruler.
In addition to their sinister appearance, the Greed will force players to tactically adapt their gameplan to compensate for the new threat. In the gameplay preview, the creative director of the game, Angelica Norgren, explains that players will set up camp where they can hope to recruit people to their cause. From there, new units will become available over time. These include new elite units that can be used on offense, defense, or economically. During the day, the Greed will set up strange goo to siphon resources from the player. At night, they will attack their position, forcing the Monarch behind the walls.
Kingdom III: Rising Realms looks to expand on the features that were successful about the original games, while making room for surprises for veterans. The game is set to release in 2027 for console and PC.
