Kholat Served Atmospheric Trailer On the Rocks

Independent Poland-based IMGN.PRO are ready to release visuals from their upcoming survival horror game, Kholat. With a recent switch to Unreal Engine 4, the trailer, “The Light is On,” gives players a view of the snowy, mountainous landscape the game takes place in.

Kholat is based off of the events of the Dyatlov Pass Incident, where nine experienced hikers mysteriously died in 1959 on the Kholat Syakhl mountain in Russia. More enigmatic, is some of the evidence from the incident, such as a tent, slashed from the inside, radiation on a few articles of clothing, and the eyes and tongue missing from one of the female hikers.

According to a press release from IMGN.PRO, much effort was expended into putting scrupulous research into the incident and the area. The trailer features the town of Ivdel, where the death-bound hikers began their journey. However, instead of taking on the role of one of these hikers, players embark on their ice-encrusted ride years after the event, to discover the ‘true’ cause of the casualties.

Kholat features a “fear management” system, where “anxiety and uncertainty” is implemented in accordance to the player’s actions. This sets up each playthrough to be a unique experience, in terms of gameplay, according to a release.

Despite the feature of randomization of gameplay, Kholat is, primarily, a story driven experience. According to a release, the narrative is driven by visuals. This aided in the decision to run the game on Unreal Engine 4.

Kholat will be released Q1 2015 for PC and Mac. The game garnered approval on Steam Greenlight, earlier this year. “The Light is On” can be viewed below. The game’s website is here, and, as of now, only features the newly released trailer.
