Almost everyone can say that they have had an experience with an unfriendly or difficult person. Years ago, this archetype was distilled into the character of “Karen”, an unfortunate situation for anyone with that name. Now, the villainous character is taking center stage by featuring as the focus of a game with the same title. Karen is a third person experience in which players will have the opportunity to live out the day of the typical Karen. The announcement trailer is filled with exaggerated carnage that players can look forward to administering.
Starting off the trailer, the Karen in question is looking at a mall and displaying seemingly irrational anger over a minor inconvenience. Things escalate quickly as the combat portion of the trailer immediately picks up with her throwing a chair to shatter glass and make her way into “Simp Mobile”. The mall is shown to be more and more devastated by her rampage as her attacks become more and more cartoonish. Leaning into the comedic nature of both the premise and game, the physics engine propels and contorts characters in ridiculous ways once defeated by the main character.
Karen’s Steam page gives more insight into the other mechanics the game offers, including a list of frustrating behaviors standard for the archetypical Karen. These include returning items damaged by the buyer, skipping lines, and getting employees fired. It also promotes itself as the opposite of a stealth game, where getting into insane conflicts leads to more favorable results. Finally, the page hints at the ability to take on the archnemesis of all Karens, a manager.
Since its reveal trailer, Karen has been receiving a large amount of attention from people who both remember the trend and are interested in the chaos the trailer offers. While the experience of being a frustrating individual with a temper may not be the most compelling story in gaming, it does promise to offer silly fun when it releases on Steam.
