Developers have been pushing the limits of gaming ever since video games were invented. This is especially true for indie developers that want to stand out in their field. Such is the case for Judero, developed by Talha and Jack Co. and released in 2024. Originally exclusive to Steam, the game has just received versions for both Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

One of Judero‘s most immediately striking features is the art direction. The game’s character is moved using stop-motion animation captured and put into the game. The result is a game that looks almost like an elaborate toy set. The movements lack the fluidity and immersion of most other titles, but Judero makes up for it with the novelty of the concept. Watching the game run is similar to watching a stop-motion film that a dedicated person could piece together over a long enough period, but with the added benefit of being playable. Many have praised the game for being just as much a showcase of the developer’s artistic capabilities as an action-adventure game.

Past the art style, Judero also allows players to access multiple mechanics to make combat more interesting. The title character is a Celt who must use his affinity with nature and combat prowess to stop the coming darkness. He is capable of dashing and dodging through attacks, making combat a fluid dance with enemies and bosses with difficult patterns. The game also gives players the ability to take control of enemies and use them to solve the game’s puzzles and battle. The game has also received updates in 2025 while the developers worked on a separate game, adding additional combat items.

Judero does not look like its peers and avoids doing what other games do in a lot of ways. The success of the indie title has gone to show just how appreciated putting one’s skills on display in a game can be. As creating games becomes more accessible, more people will be able to put their passions into video games, opening the gates on what the medium is capable of conveying. Judero is now available on sale for Xbox and PlayStation.
