Jim Ryan Believes The Future Is Bright For PlayStation Following His Retirement

After almost thirty years with PlayStation, former Sony Interactive Entertainment President & CEO Jim Ryan has officially retired from the company. To mark his retirement, Ryan did an interview with the Official PlayStation Podcast to talk the past, present, and future with PlayStation 5.

During the interview, Ryan was asked what he associates with each of the decades of the company. When talking about the 2000s, Ryan may have provided new number of PS2 sales. The PlayStation 2 is the best-selling console of all time with a reported number of around 155 million copies sold. Now, Jim Ryan says a different number. When answering the question, Ryan replied “I would say 160 million, which is the number of PS2s that we sold.”

Talking about the future of PlayStation with PS5, Ryan said “I’d say right now we’re at the top of our game. We’ve been really clear and really consistent about what we stand for great consoles, great console gaming experience, and great games. I would say that right now we’re at the top of our game.PlayStation 5 is well on track to be our most successful console ever across multiple vectors and I think the games and the gaming experiences you see on PlayStation 5, lead by PlayStation Studios, are the best that we’ve ever seen.”

Ryan also noted that “the number of games we’ve published so far on PlayStation 5 at this point in the cycle, way exceeds anything that we’ve ever done before.”

As for what’s next for PlayStation, we’re going to have to wait and see. The company revealed that they aren’t releasing any major first-party games before March 2025.

There has also been much rumor and speculation on the release of a PlayStation 5 Pro model, both of which got ramped up following the leak of the specs for the console.

By all accounts, it’s set to release this Holiday but that may change due to the lack of first-party titles coming this year.

Either way, we’ll have to wait and see what the future brings.
